SIGNAL BASICS

Railroad Signals: Learn the Logic

Exact indications vary by railroad and rulebook. These examples teach the general concepts.

Restrictive / stop concept

Red commonly appears in restrictive indications; the complete aspect determines the rule.

Approach concept

Yellow often warns of a more restrictive condition ahead.

Proceed concept

Green commonly appears in permissive indications, subject to the governing rules.

Why color alone is not enough

Signals may use multiple heads, flashing lights and different arrangements. Railroad crews learn named indications and the rules attached to them.
